The fourth annual Sand Crab Classic Perch Tournament was a huge success as anglers dodged the expected bad weather.

As the 100 contestants registered for the perch fishing tournament, the skies were dark, and a storm was expected to hit the coast at about 2 p.m. — measure-in time for the largest fish. Luckily, all the contestants fished safely and made it back in time to qualify for the big fish.

The tournament was open to any perch caught by legal means; the single largest fish measured by length won. The tournament drew people from as far as Crescent City and had many faces from fishing publications and press, most of whom have competed the past four years. With a fun atmosphere, the competition was surprisingly high — these people were serious.

At exactly 2 p.m., the measure station was closed, and as usual, we had a few late and unhappy contestants. The largest fish was a 15-inch barred surf perch caught by Tod Schallenbereger of Watsonville on a Berkley Gulp sandworm, a fact that won Schallenbereger a second trophy, rod, and reel presented by Berkley.

The next largest perch was caught by John Blinkenberg of Santa Cruz, and the third largest fish for the adult division was caught by Ron Martin. The junior division was won by Justin Morris of Alameda, followed up by last year’s winner, Kristoffer Paterson from Scotts Valley. All winners received a trophy rod and reel and, even more coveted, bragging rights.

The fishing was tough, with most contestants catching only a few perch. But the food and sponsors were great, and the Yacht Club was a great location. All proceeds, estimated at $1,500, will go to the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project.
